니스(코트 다쥐르)에 도착.  

공항의 렌터카 부스에서는 다음 트램 정류장인 터미널2로 가라고 안내했다. 우리는 즉시 오는 트램에 올라타 다음 정류장에서 내렸다. 하지만 다음 정류장은 터미널이나 렌터카 사무실과 전혀 가까워 보이지 않았다. 곧 반대 방향으로 왔다는 것을 깨달았다. 우리는 다시 트램을 타고 터미널1로 지나서 이윽고 터미널2에 도착하였다. 

전혀 익숙하지 않은 프랑스어 환경이 나를 이미 두렵게 만들었고 서둘러 잘못된 방향으로 가게 만들었다. 렌트카 사무실에 도착하니, 우리 앞에는 대여섯 팀이 줄을 서 있었다. 이제야 진정한 인내심의 미덕이 마음과 머릿속에서 심한 갈등을 겪으며 나의 참을성을 시험한다. 

직원과 고객 모두 서두르지 않고 이 렌트 절차의 모든 세부 사항에 대해 진지하게 이야기하고 싶어 한다. 황호운 씨, 여유로운 프렌치 리비에라 (French Riviera)에 오신 것을 한껏 환영합니다!

보험 문제에 대한 흥정, 나는 Priceline (onlin)을 통해 유럽 보험을 이미 미국에서 결제했다. 그런데 엔터프라이즈는 온라인에서 결제한 보험을 인정하지 않는다며 또다른 보험 패키지를 권유했다. 즉, 사고나 문제가 발생할 경우 엔터프라이즈에 직접 보험을 가입하지 않았으면 보장을 받을 수 없다. 문제 발생 시, 온라인 보험으로 보상 받으려면 제3자를 통해 별도로 협상해야 한다는 것이다. 

우리는 중형 세단을 받았다. 우리는 차량 외관을 전후좌우를 통하여 비디오로 찍어 증거로 남겼다. 내부도 꼼꼼히 살폈다. 다행히 내비게이션이 달려 있었다. 주차장 건물의 모든 표지판이 불어로 되어 있다, 당연하게도. 출구(‘Sortie’) 표지판을 찾는 것도 고역이었다. Sortie를 따라 나가도 이 렌터카 주차장 건물에서 제대로 안전하게 나갈 수 있으려면 좌회전인지 우회전인지 아리송하다. 

내가 본 차선들은 모두 버지니아 주보다 훨씬 좁아 보였다. 시작부터 난관이다, 아이고. 톨게이트(고속도로 통행료)는 어떻게 내야 하는지도 걱정이었다. 그런데 인내심이 바닥났다. 일단 나가자. 톨게이트 문제는 나중에, 아니 그냥 닥치는 대로 해결하자.

니스는 지중해 연안의 국제도시다. 이 복잡한 도시와 좁은 차선으로 점철된 도회지의 찌들음에서 한시라도 빨리 벗어나고 싶었다. 백만 명 이상이 서로 경쟁하며 도로를 달리는 버지니아에서 벗어나려 휴가왔는데, 여기도 만만치 않다.

곧 우리는 첫번째 호텔(Les Vergers de Saint Paul)에 도착할 수 있었다. 호텔은 언덕길에 위치하고 뒤쪽에 울창한 나무숲의 산이 병풍을 치고 있으며, 앞으로는 탁 트인 풍경이 펼쳐지는 아주 멋진 부동산이다. 주소: 940 Rte de la Colle, 06570 Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. 

첫 관문은 성곽과 중세 마을 근처에 주차 공간 찾기였다. 몇 바퀴 돌고 나서야 성 근처 유료 주차장이 답이라는 걸 깨닫게 됐다. 성곽과 상점까지 자갈길을 걸었다. 딱딱한 자갈길이 노인네 발에 별로 친근스럽지않다. 

곳곳에 아틀리에, 레스토랑, 관광객을 위한 상점들이 있다. 자갈길이 아름답게 꾸며져 있는, 매우 인상적인 마을 산책로이다. 잘 보존된 건축물 외관과 덩굴과 꽃으로 장식된 건물들도 인상적이다. 건물이나 시설이 건축학적으로 잘 관리되고 있다. 오래된 성벽과 성 내부의 고풍스러운 거리들이 점포들과 식당들과 잘 어울리며 자리잡고 있다.

중세기 대포와 무기의 유적들이 성벽과 성루에 보인다. 집권층의 더 많은 권력, 더 큰 자산을 향한 욕망을 위하여, 국민이나 부족은 더 큰 희생을 치루는 반영이라 볼 수 있다. 마을 북단에서 마르크 샤갈의 묘지를 발견하였다. 샤갈 작품에 관한 지식은 부족하나, 그의 무덤을 이곳에서 발견하며, 발길이 계속되는 관광객들의 방문으로 인하여 그의 예술적 가치를 생각하게 된다.

베르동 협곡(Gorges du Verdon)  

Saint Paul 호텔 아침식사는 매우 실망스러웠다. 부엌에서 계란요리 두 개 만드는 데 15분 이상 넘게 걸렸다. 아주 간단한 아침에 대하여 도무지 칭찬할 게 없다. 사람들이 이런 곳에서 하룻밤에 800유로를 지불하며 지내는 이유를 도저히 모르겠다. 우리의 숙박비는 300유로였다. 

서쪽으로 Moustiers-Sainte-Marie라는 또 다른 잘 보존된 중세 마을로 향했다. 안전한 고속도로 대신, 베르동 지역의 산악 지역을 통해 좁은 지방도로를 탔다. 마치 콜로라도 서부의 백만 달러 고속도로를 달리는 듯한 느낌이었다. 산을 따라 오르락내리락하며 지그재그로 작은 고성들을 지나며 운전하는 것이 흥미로웠다.

호텔 근처에 도착하자, 산중 도로에서 Lac de Sainte-Croix라는 아름다운 호수를 발견하게 되었다. 사진 찍는 시간! 좁은 도로라 잠시 주차할 공간이 부족하다. 그러나 이 장관을 사진으로 가져가지 않으면 두고두고 후회할 것 같았다. 그리하여 바야흐로 무리해서 갓길에 주차했다. 호수가 산중 도로에서 약 3,000피트 아래에 펼쳐져 있다. 곧이어 한 대만 커플도 우리와 같이 사진을 찍으려고 주차했다. 타이완 남성이 우리 부부 사진을 찍어줬다. 나는 "셰셰"라고 했지만 그는 나에게 응답하지 않았다. 아내 말로는 타이완 사람들은 중국인으로 불리는 것을 싫어한다고 한다.

골짜기에 위치한 호텔, Hôtel Le Colombier, 166 Rte de la Palud, 04360 Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, France. 또 다른 경치 좋은 부동산. 완만한 경사에 위치한 호텔은 동쪽으로 호수, 서쪽으로 다른 중세 마을인 Moustiers-Sainte-Marie와 거대 암벽 산으로 둘러싸여 있다. 호텔 체크인 후 마을을 탐방했다. 폭포와 그 물줄기가 마을을 관통한다. 상점과 식당들은 관광객들을 위해 줄지어 서 있다. 

Saint Paul에서 이미 최고의 중세마을를 경험한 것 같다. 이 마을은 흐르는 시냇물과 오래된 대성당(Notre Dame de Beauvoir)까지 이어진 긴 가파른 등산로가 독특하다. 그렇게 높은 곳에 그 큰 교회를 짓다니 경이롭지만, 얼마나 많은 생명과 자원이 종교라는 기관에 희생되었을지 의문이 들기도 한다.

우리 호텔은 식당들과 멀리 떨어져 있었기 때문에 우리는 컵라면으로 저녁을 대신하였다. 뜨겁고 매운 라면 한 그릇이면 충분했다. 더 바랄 게 없었다. 맛있다!

Arrival in Nice (Côte d'Azur). 

Enterprise Rental Car booth at NICE airport directs us to Terminal 2 from Terminal 1, which is the next tram stop. We immediately hopped on a tram coming and alighted at the next stop. But the next stop never seemed to be close to any terminal or rental car agency. Soon we figured that we took wrong direction. We took another tram back to Terminal 1 and stayed on to the next stop for Terminal 2. Totally unfamiliar territory in French language perhaps already shook my mind in the terrifying manner and rushed me leading to taking the wrong direction tram. 

There were about five parties ahead of us in the line waiting for the car rental agency. Now the real virtue of patience starts to afloat from my heart and mind. Both the representatives and customers talk every possible detail of this renting procedures without hurry. Welcome to this relaxing French Riviera, Howard!

One haggling thing about insurance. I already paid for the insurance to Priceline (online seller). Enterprise tried to push me pay another insurance package since Enterprise does not recognize the insurance I paid to the online vendor. In other words, in the event of accident or damage, Enterprise would not cover me unless I buy the insurance directly from them. My coverage with Priceline will have to be negotiated around, should something happens, with Enterprise and/or third parties.

We were given a medium sedan. We videotaped all exterior and visually examined the interior. Good thing the car comes with the navigation. Every sign is French, of course, in the garage building where we picked the car from. Where is the exit? Let me get out of here. It is painfully slow to find the exit sign (‘Sortie’). Once on Sortie, is it left or right to properly and safely get out of this rental car garage building? Do I make a left turn or right turn once on the road? All the lanes in my sight seem quite narrow, compared to the lanes in Virginia. A whole lot of trouble ahead of me, oh, lord. I am now terrified to the max. How to pay the tolls was my next question in the very back of my mind. But I now lost my patience. Let me get out of here. I will figure the toll business later or manana, not today. 

Nice is an international city on Mediterranean Sea. I now truly want to escape this bustling city with slim-trafic lanes everywhere else, as soon as possible. I thought I escaped Fairfax, Virginia, where million people drive around for vanities. After driving through city roads and countryside roads, and a lot of roundabouts, I was able to arrive at the hotel, L es Vergers de Saint Paul–. Hotel is located on a hilly roadside with uphill back with lots of trees, near Sait Paul de Vence. 940 Rte de la Colle, 06570 Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. This is a truly nice real estate with views of trees in the hilly mountain in the back, and the open view miles long in the front. 

Soon, we drove toward the castle and for lunch. First hurdle in finding a parking Cobblestone walk into the castle and shops. Not easy on this old man’s feet. Lots of ateliers, restaurants, shops for tourists. Wonderfully decorated village walk with cobblestones and other decorating stones. Well preserved building façade, wonderfully decorated building exterior with rambling plants and flowers. Architecturally well-kept and well-maintained. Old castle walls, old streets inside of the castle, archaic remains of ancient cannons and guns

space near the castle and its medieval village. Drove around and around, and we got to realize to park at a parking garage for a fee near castle. 

reflect the nature of human sapiens of its desire and the ambition for the achievement of more power, more abundant assets, and yet more demand of sacrifice of own people’s toll and sacrifice. At the northern end of the village, we found the grave of Marc Chagall. I ain’t much of Chagall’s fan. But, finding his grave at such a high old village was interesting enough.

Verdon Gorge (Gorges du Verdon) 

Breakfast at the hotel in Saint Paul was quite disappointing. Kitchen staf took more than fifteen minutes to make two scrambled eggs. A rather quite simple breakfast had nothing to commend about. I do not understand why some people are willing to pay up to 800 euros for a night to stay here at all. Our room charge was about 300 euros, by the way. 

We headed west toward Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, another well-kept medieval As we get near the next hotel, we ran into a gorgeous lake, Lac de Sainte-Croix, from the mid-mountain road. Picture village. Instead of taking safe highways to save tim, we took the narrow local road through mountain region, Verdon Region. Feeling like driving down the million- dollar highway in Colorado. Exciting to drive along the up and down hills and zig zaggy along the mountains. Mountain scenes, incredibly beautiful various forms of clouds in the high blue sky, small old castle remains, most of all the freshest balmy air. Best drive ever!

Time! The narrow mountain roads do not give us much space for brief parking. But we dare to park at a slight extra space of the road because we strongly feel this is a truly once in a lifetime opportunity to imprint this magnificent view. The lake is probably 3,000 feet down from this mountain road. We soon found a Taiwanese couple who appears to be of our minds. They also risked parking and taking pictures in a hurry, just like us. Taiwanese man took pictures of us. I said shei shei. He never responded. According to my wife, Taiwanese hate to be identified as Chinese. Oh, Well.

After arriving at the hotel, which is situated away from the restaurants, we defied those restaurants opening at 7pm. Instead we cooked ramen for the supper. The steamy spicy noodle is it! One cup ramen did it. We could not ask for more. Enough! Delicious!
